Embracing the everyday.
The end of week three of distant learning and isolation has arrived, and my kids are going through all of the emotions.
As I’ve watched my two children navigate through the always-home life of the coronavirus lockdown, I’ve done my best to unobtrusively capture what they’re going through…what we’re all going through.
With the exception of a morning and afternoon walk around the neighborhood, they’re home all day and all night. I’m no longer shuttling everyone between school, play dates, dance classes and music lessons. That’s kind of nice, but I know they miss face-to-face time with teachers, fellow students and their friends.
This feels big in many ways, an event that my 12-year-old and 6-year-old will always remember. And I know they will mostly remember it through pictures: The game nights where we laughed, the long walks at sunset in city parks, the failed attempts at baking our own bread, their home-school setups, the morning Zoom classes, the many couch forts, and their time playing together. It’s an important few months in their childhood, I try to remind myself every day as I document their happiness, boredom, worries and sadness. This experience will hopefully contain some lessons that give them lifelong strength. All things pass, and their lives will get back to what they were, if not even busier, soon.
So go photograph your child. This is a moment to remember.
