My husband likes to joke that all I do is push a button. First, let me just say, this joke never gets old (to him) and is usually followed by a large eye roll on my end.
The truth is, getting that perfect photo is a rare alignment of multiple elements and a little bit of luck. A big part of my job is making sure I’m in the right place at the right time. Knowing what my client wants gives me the insight I need. I do my homework and prepare.
The most important element is light. I want to take pictures in the morning or late afternoon/early evening. That dreamy light is worth it because it adds so much to your family photos.
Another little secret is your kids are really my boss. I want them to be their most playful, happy selves. If they wake up bright-eyed and ready, morning sessions are the best for your family. If they are great after a nap and snack, then late afternoon sessions are better. I’m always watching for clues to see when we should wrap things up, because when kids are done taking pictures, they’re done.
Stress-free sessions are another important element. I want happy parents! That doesn’t mean your kids are going to behave all the time, or at all. But if parents are carefree and appreciate a little bit of child chaos, I find that you will relax and let your guard down. In turn, I’m able to witness a glimpse of your real life. The not-perfect one. This is what I love about documentary and lifestyle photography. Sometimes the belly laughs and the tantrums tell the best story.
My best work happens when the camera becomes an afterthought to everyone in front of it. I have been doing this for a long time. I know how to create beautiful compositions in great light, capturing your best angle. I work hard to make sure you are comfortable. When I convince you to let go of any insecurities and just be present, magic ensues.
If I do my job right, and present back to you an image of your family as you truly feel, not just what you look like, you will have artwork of your real life. Years from now, this won’t just be an old picture. It will be nostalgia brought to life.
This year seems even more crucial than most to embrace these moments. Contact me soon to schedule a Fall Session with your family.
