If there’s such a thing as the most nostalgic month of the year, I believe it’s September.
There’s just something about the change of summer into fall that triggers a deep, emotional response: the smell of pencil shavings, the return of school busses on the road, the start of pumpkin patches popping up… all of it brings up thoughts of how fast life flies by. How fleeting it is.
And because of that, I often find myself pulling out my old photo albums… not just the ones where my kids are little, but the ones where I was little.
Family photography has always been a priority to my Dad who made sure to take his camera along with him everywhere (I wonder where I got my photo bug from?!?). Seeing the places and pets and people that populate my memories in print is truly the stuff that inspires the work that I do today. And one of the most important lessons I take from those trips down memory lane?
Is to be sure the person who typically has the camera in their hand gets in front of the camera regularly too.
Certain family members always avoided being in photos due to a (completely preposterous) belief that they looked terrible in them. Sound familiar? Yeah, me too.
This is why I make it a point to get IN the photo with my kids, even though it’s outside my comfort zone.
And I hope you make a point of the same… if you can’t do it for yourself, do it for them.
You’re their whole world right now, and when September rolls around 20 or 30 or 50 years from now, they’re going to want to look back and see you just the way you are today.
