Digitals and Prints Truly Are A Love Story

Three prints of family portraits in New Orleans for a story about how digitals and prints truly are a love story.

Why Prints Matter

If you are a family that is returning to Twirl Photography for your annual photos, you know that every digital collection offered in your final gallery includes a combination of digital images and print products. This has been a welcome pairing that offers the best of both worlds. There is a very important reason all of the digital image collections come with prints. To me, digitals and prints truly are a love story.

Sometimes I get this question from people who reach out about family photos: “Is there any way to skip the print and just get the digital files?”
And yep, I get it. Digital files seem . . . easy.
They seem manageable.
A digital file doesn’t require work.
A digital file doesn’t take any time . . . it’s just click, click, boom—Instagram post.
So it stands to reason that if you skip the print and get only digital files, maybe you’ll save a few dollars.
The problem is that those reasons are the same reasons that so few families these days have (updated) photos on their walls or albums on their shelves.
Think about all the pictures on your phone that you never do anything with. All the pictures on a hard drive somewhere slowly getting forgotten. The lack of time to sift through them. We all deal with it.
Remember that prints are included with your digital collection (so it doesn’t change the price to remove them) . . . and it’s there for a very important reason:
To guarantee that this beautiful record of a special time in your family’s life gets the recognition it deserves. And you are printing your memories.
Part of my mission as a photographer (and a busy mom myself) is to do the heavy lifting for you—the organizing, selecting, editing and enhancing—to take this off your plate and serve it back to you on a beautiful, done-for-you platter.
I don’t need you to have walls full of my art, but long after those digital images have gotten buried under a million more digital files, I want you to have at least one gorgeous piece that you can touch and feel and smile at as you walk by it every single day. That’s why digital image collections come with prints.

Do you remember growing up that most parents would have the shoe box in the closet filled with old pictures. Some were handed down for generations, some were picked up at the local 24hr printer. But they were there, ready to be admired, laughed over and reminisced. And would even guess that the same prints are sitting in some box somewhere ready to be handed down. Now imagine if your parents or grandparents only took pictures on their phone.

You are putting in the hard work, dressing up, wrangling together your kids and maybe the family dog. Convincing your husband or partner that this matters to you. You should be able to look at your favorite image on your hallway wall every day.

Holiday Card Inspiration

And during the holiday season your first thought is creating that holiday card. I have a great list of my preferred online direct-to-consumer holiday card companies you can check out with my tips for Best Places to Order Your Photo Holiday Cards. Getting around to printing your memories, however, can be yet another checklist item you just don’t have time for. That is another reason why printing your memories is best handed over to the professional. Once you choose your collection; you will choose your digital images and the select amount of prints. Prints and digital images combined to make it as easy for you as possible.

A week or so later, they will be delivered ready to frame or keep in your very own shoe box. It’s the best of both worlds, prints married with your digital images.

When you invest in professional photography, you should see what a professional print looks like. The colors will be vivid on luster paper (not too glossy and not too dull) and the thickness of the paper feels great in your hands. My computer screen is calibrated for the professional printing labs I use and I know the quality you get will be much better than a quick print. Prints and digital images should look the same in quality.

A Wall Gallery to Grow With your Kids

We are all overwhelmed by the amount of digital images on our phone. So much, that it’s hard to face the idea that one good drop and they might be gone. Although your professional photos will be printed, it’s hard to know what to do with all the snapshots you take daily. Here’s a great article by Artifact Uprising about how and what to do with them. There is no better way to enjoy your pictures than to see your kids smiling back at you in a beautiful gallery the whole family will enjoy everyday.

Digitals and prints truly are a love story.
