What’s The #1 Location for Summer Photos in New Orleans?

I was on the phone with a new client the other day, talking through the details… what time we should start, what they should wear, and where we should plan to meet. And of course, how to beat the heat for summer photos. So what’s my recommendation for where to take summer family photos in New Orleans? It’s not the time of year most families want to be outside. But with a little planning we can beat the heat for summer photos.
These are details I’ve seen play out in every possible configuration for fun family photos in summer – sunrise sessions in the Garden District, mid-day sessions at your favorite neighborhood ice cream parlor, and sunset sessions in City Park. And honestly? I love them all…
…but if you ask my opinion on where we should have your session, my answer will ALWAYS be:
The best location for summer photos in New Orleans happens at home.
Even if your house is small.
Even if your house is dark.
Even if your house is messy.
Even if your “house” is a rental apartment that you haven’t bothered to decorate because you’re moving soon.
Why?
Because as cheesy as it is, home really is where the heart is.
- It’s where your kids have all their favorite toys (which makes for a great icebreaker).
- It’s where your puppy can join on the couch for a family snuggle.
- It’s where your kids can play in a sprinkler or jump in the pool in your backyard for some truly fun family photos in summer.
I could go on.
Photos at home are inherently personal, inherently relaxed, and inherently YOU. They’ll never feel dated, and in addition to the memories we’ll be capturing of the people in your life, we’ll be capturing the seemingly-unimportant odds and ends of life that you (AND your kids) will be nostalgic for years from now. It’s honestly, the best location for summer photos in New Orleans.
Of course, a quick look through my portfolio will show you that I don’t always photograph people in their homes. And I’d never pressure you to have a session at home if you didn’t want to.
But if I can remove the stress of finding that “just right” location, make your session more convenient and comfortable (especially during the heat of Summer), AND make family photos that look and feel 100% true-to-you, I’m here for it. Especially if we can beat the heat for summer photos.
For the best family photos in summer, I like to start in your home to document your family dynamics, maybe some jumping on the bed, teaching the dog to sit, cuddling on the couch. And then move outside for water time with a pool or sprinkler. A cute bathing suit (for kids) and a cute kaftan or dress for mom, and we are good to go. One warning, kids think it is really fun to get their parents wet.
