Newborn Nursery Trends in New Orleans

Newborn Nursery Trends in New Orleans that are perfect for your baby’s first portraits!

One of the first things I want to see when I arrive at your home for your newborn’s first portraits is the nursery. It’s a room that most expecting parents have been ruminating over for the past nine or so months. Sometimes it comes together last minute and sometimes it’s been a labor of love long before your baby’s due date was even known. This gives me as a newborn photographer a peak at newborn nursery trends in New Orleans. And it keeps me in the know for the latest trends in nurseries in New Orleans.

This time in your life is so special and I’m often struck by how much care and attention have gone into creating these gorgeous rooms and because of that, it’s the perfect place for newborn photography to capture your infant’s first days in their childhood home. A newborn photography session in your nursery is so special.

The nursery isn’t just for your new baby, it’s for your whole family. It’s a room that you will be spending a lot of time in when it comes to care of your child. And if there is an older sister or brother in the family, making it fun for them as well can make your time inside even easier and more enjoyable.

You are also bound to take hundreds of photos of your new baby in their nursery as they start to grow, crawl and cruise. And if you hire a professional newborn photographer, like myself, your interior design will be well photographed.

So the pressure is on. I know this sounds like a lot, but don’t fret. I have seen the most beautiful nurseries come together last minute, take shape in a former walk in-closet, and some that have been designed by the most talented interior designers in New Orleans. And they were all a perfect place to hold and rock your new little one.

Here are some of the latest decorating trends I have been photographing at my client’s home during newborn photos in New Orleans, they will hopefully give you a little inspiration for your next nursery!

That wallpaper is to die for!

And it’s a nursery trend I can get behind; be bold and make this room an experience. Jack Everett’s room designed by the extraordinary local New Orleans interior designer Hattie Sparks was perfect from head to toe. But it was the bold and enchanting wall paper that made this nursery extra special to walk into and photograph. Mixed with the brass of his crib, floor to ceiling custom drapes and the modern light fixtures, his nursery was the perfect spot to show just how tiny Jack Everett was at 2-weeks old. The love seat made for an even better perch for his 6-month photos. This room is truly one that will grow with Jack Everett!

HIRING AN ARTIST IS A HUGE TREND IN NURSERY DECOR

A Mural for Your Nursery

In classic New Orleans shotgun house style, Enzo’s nursery was a little tight. The modern crib (with storage!) nestled nicely at the end of the room with a little space for a dresser and a rocking chair. But Enzo’s mom found a way to give this space that extra little punch by hiring a local artist Stephanie Reed to paint a mural of hot air balloons floating in clouds, complete with their family cat taking a ride. The result is a warm an inviting nursery, plus the perfect backdrop for newborn photos.

And if a mural artist isn’t available, there are so many wonderful wall decals that will add the drama without the commitment of paint or wallpaper. These little silver starts reflected on Maisie’s nursery wall added that little charming motif. I love these modern and boho style decals from Project Nursery. Don’t forget to leave space for that gallery wall that will grow with your child, starting with these beautiful newborn photos.

CLASSIC NURSERY WITH A POP OF COLOR ARE PERFECT FOR YOUR NEWBORN’S 1ST PORTRAITS

Classic Neutral Nursery

Henry and George’s classic blue and grey room (designed by their mom) was gorgeous to photograph! The little moments of color, including their friendly large giraffe and the animal drawings by local New Orleans artist Alex Beard, add such personality to the room.

This a nursery filled with natural light, and plenty of room for these twin boys to start playing on the big rug and cruise around. It might get a little messier when these boys hit toddler-hood, but for now it’s a relaxing and soothing place for mom and dad to enjoy spending all that quality time.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE IS A CONSTANT BABY’S ROOM TREND

Sophisticated Spaces

Classic and elegant, using a neutral background with a touch of nostalgia, this timeless and traditional look is always gorgeous and luxe, especially when you mix it with personal details. These sophisticated spaces usually use neutral color palettes, high-quality luxe finishes and timeless design elements to create space that will grow with the child and often speak to the minimalist at heart. It’s always perfect for photos of your little one (or multiples) when they are little as the clean lines and neutral colors make for a beautiful clean backdrop that let the subject shine.

LET YOUR TEXTILES SHINE FOR THOSE PHOTO CLOSEUPS

Graphic and Fun

Have you seen all of the graphic and fun crib sheets out there? If you like to keep your overall design clean and neutral, these fun textiles add in that little bit of punch and color. They also make for a great and safe place to grab a snapshot of your child’s growth from month to month. When you first bring home your newborn, it may feel like they will never graduate from their cradle to their crib, but it will happen sooner than you think and in the meantime you get to enjoy your design aesthetic.

ROOM FOR EVERYONE IN YOUR NEW ORLEANS NURSERY

 Room For Everyone to Play

If this is your second, third or even fourth child, you might have a few extra hands visiting the nursery. Making this a special place for everyone to hang out is a definite trend showing up at each new newborn photo session.

Those graphic and colorful rugs are fun to photograph everyone playing and reading together on, including this one from Crate & Kids. Mom’s bachelorette love seat, below, has a new purpose in Helen’s room and has become the perfect place for their dog to watch the squirrels.

Bring in the Heirlooms

And chances are, one of your nursery chairs are going to become the setting for your baby’s first professional photo! I’ve photographed newborns on some special heirlooms that have been passed down from generation to generation. Those antiques can come back to life in a nursery.
