New Orleans Photographer | What to expect with your newborn and siblings first photo session.
Perhaps this is your family’s first newborn session even though it’s your second or third child. Or perhaps this is a newborn tradition in your home to capture those little baby toes for prosperity. Adding an older brother or sister into a newborn session can be a tumultuous and unknown event, but every parent wants to remember those first days of one of the most important budding relationship in your family.
As a seasoned and experienced photographer, I know how important capturing those first sweet kisses and hugs can be for parents. I also know that not every older sibling is feeling that great about adding a new creature to the family dynamic. It takes a gentle touch and patience to get to the moment worth framing. Here are few tips for setting your family up for success.
Be Excited: Tell big brother that this is the time to show off his big brother abilities such as gently holding, laying next to or sweetly counting those little toes. As much as this is a session for your new baby, it’s also a celebration of your first born and all the changes that have led to this moment.
Be Patient: As soon as I arrive, I will be reading the room. If I feel like big sister needs some time in the spot light first, I will make sure she gets it and then we will move into adding a little newborn. If she doesn’t want anything to do with me or the new baby, we might start with family photos and see if we can slowly reduce to just the kids. And if she doesn’t want to have anything to do with baby, that’s okay. Next time they will be the best of friends.
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff: A hair might go out of place, the baby might make a mess, the bed might not be made- don’t worry. I’m here to help and beautiful light and moments are what I am looking for most in a newborn session. It may not feel like all is going well, but I know what I’m looking for and how to get there for a stunning candid and authentic portrait of your growing family.
Don’t forget that July is Baby Month and the perfect opportunity to document your growing family. If you still count in months the age of your youngest, contact me during the month of July to schedule your session and enjoy half-off your session fee.
I hope to meet your little ones soon!
