A great way to document this special time of pregnancy and show off your baby bump is by planning maternity photos. Whether you love a flowing, organic feel in a grassy field or sophisticated flare with maternity photos in New Orleans, the following tips are a great way to rock your maternity photos.

Before your session, I recommend deciding on what photography style makes your heart skip a beat. My maternity photography style is natural, candid and documentary. Other photographers may have a studio, or work in a traditional glamour style. Make sure you do your research and find a professional family photographer who makes you feel comfortable and offers guidance to help you capture this special moment. It’s just one step in planning maternity photos that make you sing.

Find the right photographer for your maternity session

Make sure to do your research and find a professional maternity photographer who makes you feel comfortable and offers guidance to help you capture this special moment. A seasoned maternity photographer will lead you to flattering poses, notice if you need a water break and let you be in the moment without too much hassle. If you are adding in an older sibling who is excited about your baby bump, it’s important to find a photographer that is good working with little kids who want to feel included and special at this time in your family’s life.

The Best Outfits for Maternity Photos

After you book your maternity photographer, start looking for a rocking outfit. You want to feel confident and beautiful in your maternity photos so shop around for some ideas. You might also be chasing after your first child, so make sure it’s a dress or outfit you can move in. Several months of the year are hot in New Orleans, look for clothing that is light and breathes as we wander around. Choose clothing that falters your figure while still showing off your baby bump. My favorite silhouette is a maxi dress. Tight on the top with a long flowy bottom. It’s flattering for all bodies.

Finding What Makes you Feel Great

Pick out clothing carefully for the best outfit for your maternity photos: You want to feel confident and beautiful in your maternity photos. Local New Orleans women and child boutique Peony is fabulous for those flowing dresses that fit before and after baby! As is New Orleans vintage women’s boutique Trashy Diva (check out the peacock dress above!). For more advice on what to wear for your maternity photos check out my advice here!

     Accessorize

Make sure to accessorize! Beautiful earrings, hair-style and nails can be a wonderful detail for your maternity photos. Dad will also be an accessory so he should be photo-ready.  Accessories can add some fun elements to your photos, such as a bouquet, cute hat or headband, a floral crown, or a special item that is meaningful to you. Feel free to bring along any items you would like to incorporate in your photos, like sonogram images or baby shoes.

This is more than you baby bump and details help tell the story of who you are and your partner’s journey with you.

     Location, Location, Location

For a memorable experience, choose a location in the New Orleans area that you find absolutely beautiful for maternity photos.  Pregnant moms have love maternity photos in Audubon Park and City Park for those big trees and fields of flowers. A quiet morning in the French Quarter or the Marigny is the perfect place to create these lasting memories if you love a more urban setting. Or a walk along the New Orleans or Mandeville lakefront at sunset is stunning.  If you are up for a short drive, the beaches at Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian or the Sunflower fields in Picayune, Ms. can be a lovely locations for photography.
