Frequently Asked Questions Maternity and Newborn Photography | New Orleans, LA Newborn Photographer
Are you considering a maternity or newborn photo session and have some questions? I love helping clients plan for a smooth portrait experience, so I hope these help with your planning process.
Q: What is the best time for maternity photos?
A: 30-34 weeks is a great time for maternity photos. I want the belly to be nice and round so waiting until at least 30 weeks is great for that silhouette. But let’s not wait too long after 34 weeks so you still feel comfortable, can walk with ease, and really enjoy the experience.
Q: What should I wear for maternity photos?
A: Maxi dresses are my favorite. Not only do they photograph beautifully, but they are also super comfortable. A long dress will give you lots of options to show off your bump and help create gorgeous movement in the photos.
Q: Are maternity portraits worth it?
A. Absolutely! While pregnancy is hard, there is something simultaneously magical about it. You’re growing a new life…and that’s pretty special. Believe it or not, you will one day miss this time. A special portrait will always bring you back to this time and you can share it with your child one day.
Q: When should I book my newborn session?
A: Please reach out by your second trimester so we can discuss your plans. I love learning about families and how I can make your session perfect for you
Q: When does my newborn session take place?
A: Ideally, I like photographing newborns in their first two weeks of life. They are still sleepy and happy to quietly snuggle with you. But, babies just get cuter with age, so whenever you are ready is a great time for newborn photos.
Q: How do I prepare my home for the session?
A: I don’t need too much space for the newborn photos. I use natural light so I usually will head for the windows and put my family there. I would recommend tidying up clutter, papers, electronics for a simple palette. I will usually photograph in the living room, nursery, and master bedroom. A solid comforter on the master bed always looks great.
Q: What happens if my baby is fussy the day of the session?
A: Everyone worries about this one. My sessions are long enough for plenty of soothings, feedings and changes. For best success, try to feed baby before I arrive for the session. A full belly is a happy belly!
Q: Do you bring props to the session?
As a lifestyle photographer, my goal is to capture family connections at home versus the use of props. I bring my camera, lenses, and some simple swaddles. Your home environment makes the perfect backdrop. If you have a family heirloom or outfit you’d like to photograph your baby in, we can incorporate that into your session.
Q: Do you pose the baby?
A. I will direct you to place the baby in the best lighting and may wrap the baby in a swaddle but I don’t do much posing when it comes to my lifestyle sessions. Because I don’t use props, we won’t be putting baby in froggy poses or putting baby in a basket. Baby alone or in the family’s arms are the perfect places for newborn babies at lifestyle sessions!
Q: How does a session typically flow?
A: Please have baby in a solid, neutral onesie when I arrive. I ask for a tour of your home so I can scout for pretty light. I usually will start the family in the living room, go to the nursery, and then the master bedroom. We will photograph the baby alone, with both parents together and then each separately with the baby. Siblings are encouraged to participate! Those can be truly precious moments.
