A sleepy newborn

During my work as a photojournalist for 14 years, I was part of many press pits at concerts and other events where I had to fight my way to the front. I chased U.S. Presidents to photograph them shaking people’s hands. I clamored for the right angle on a catwalk during New York fashion week, where my fellow photographers seemed more competitive than the models. Having all of that experience in the trenches taught me an important thing: Patience is everything. When I photographed baby Evan last week in hoping to catch him sound asleep in some adorable position, I realized how easy Anne Geddes makes this look. There is nothing harder than getting a newborn to fall asleep when you want, in a position you want. But as mom Amy and I whispered and cooed, Evan eventually was unable to resist. Amy was graceful and smooth in moving the sleeping baby, despite one unshielded peeing incident, and I couldn’t be happier with the pictures.

Thank you Evan, you even smile in your sleep.
